Will applying for car finance affect your credit score?

By the Northern Bear Automotive team · 3 July 2026 · 4 min read

The question we get asked more than any other. Here's the honest difference between a quick eligibility check and a full application — in plain English.

It's the question we get asked more than almost any other: will checking car finance hurt my credit score? Fair enough — nobody wants to dent their rating just to see what's possible. The short version is that getting an indication usually won't, but a full application will leave a mark. Here's the difference.

Soft searches vs hard searches

A soft search is a light-touch look at your credit file. It's the kind used for quotes and eligibility checks, and here's the key bit — only you can see it. It doesn't affect your score, and lenders looking at your file later won't even know it happened.

A hard search is the full check a lender runs when you actually apply. That one is recorded for others to see, and a flurry of them close together can look like you're chasing credit — which isn't the signal you want to send.

Where a broker fits in

This is one of the quiet advantages of going through a broker. Rather than applying to lender after lender yourself — each one a hard search — we look across our panel and steer your details towards the lenders most likely to suit you. Fewer applications, smaller footprint.

And when you enquire with us, we'll always be clear about which stage you're at, so nothing lands on your credit file by surprise.

A few sensible habits

  • Check your own report before you start — it's free through the main credit reference agencies, and only ever a soft search on yourself
  • Get on the electoral roll at your current address; lenders like being able to confirm where you live
  • Don't fire off lots of applications in a short window
  • Fix the obvious errors, like an old account still showing as open

Want to see what might be possible without committing to anything? Start a no-obligation enquiry and we'll take it from there, subject to status.
