How much deposit do you need for car finance?

One of the first things people ask — and the honest answer is that it depends, and sometimes you don't need one at all.

How big a deposit do I need? It's one of the first things people ask, and the honest answer is that it depends — and sometimes you don't need one at all.

Do you actually need one?

A deposit isn't always required. Plenty of agreements can be arranged without a penny down. But putting something in does change the shape of the deal, so it's worth knowing what it does before you decide either way.

What a deposit actually does

Put simply, a deposit lowers the amount you need to borrow. Borrow less and the balance spread across your agreement is smaller. It can also give a lender a little more confidence in an application.

Your old car counts, too

Here's the bit people forget: a part-exchange works just like a deposit. If you're trading in your current car, its value can go straight towards the new one and bring down what you finance — no cash out of your pocket needed.

So, how much?

There's no magic number. More down generally means less to borrow; nothing down keeps your cash where it is for now. The right balance comes down to your budget and what you're comfortable with — and we'll talk it through rather than nudge you towards a figure that doesn't suit.
