Sole trader, contractor or company director? Car finance is very much open to you — it's mostly the way you prove your income that differs.
Being your own boss shouldn't mean jumping through extra hoops for a car. Self-employed applications do work a little differently, mind — mostly around how you evidence what you earn. Whether you're a sole trader, a contractor, or you run your own limited company, finance is still well within reach.
Proving your income
When you're employed, payslips do the talking. Self-employed, lenders usually want to see a bit more of the picture: recent accounts, your SA302 tax calculations, or a run of business bank statements. It isn't about making life difficult — it's about showing your income is steady enough to carry the payments comfortably.
The core question is the same
Strip it back and a lender is asking exactly what they'd ask anyone: does this fit your budget, month in and month out? Affordability and your credit history still count just as much as they would for an employed applicant.
What helps
- Keep your books tidy and up to date — recent, clean accounts make everything smoother
- Have a couple of years of trading history to point to, if you can
- Know your numbers: a realistic view of income and regular outgoings
- Tell us how you trade — sole trader, partnership or limited company — as it can shape the options
One for your accountant
If the vehicle's for work, there may be tax angles worth understanding. We're finance brokers rather than tax advisers, though, so that's a quick chat to have with your accountant alongside arranging the finance.
