The documents you need to apply for car finance

Nothing slows an application down like hunting for paperwork halfway through. Get these together first and it all moves quicker.

Nothing slows a car finance application down like hunting for paperwork halfway through. Pull these bits together before you start and the whole thing tends to move a good deal quicker.

Proof of who you are

A valid photo ID — usually a driving licence or passport — covers this. Your licence does double duty, since you'll need one to drive the car anyway.

Where you've lived

Lenders typically want your address history going back around three years. If you've moved in that time, have your previous addresses ready — gaps are one of the most common things that hold an application up.

What you earn and what you spend

Expect to share employment details and a realistic picture of your income and regular outgoings. If you're self-employed, that might mean recent accounts or bank statements rather than payslips.

The finer details

  • Bank account details, for setting up payments
  • Your National Insurance number, in some cases
  • The vehicle and the dealer, if you've already found the car

Have that lot to hand and you're in good shape. Start a no-obligation enquiry whenever you're ready and we'll guide you through the rest, subject to status.
