Service history and mileage
A full service history is reassuring; big unexplained gaps rather less so. Cross-check the mileage against those old MOTs while you're at it, and make sure it climbs sensibly year on year — figures that don't add up are always worth a question.
See it, hear it, drive it
- View it in daylight and dry weather — rain and dusk hide a multitude of sins
- Look for mismatched paint or uneven panel gaps that hint at past repairs
- Take a proper test drive: a cold start, some motorway speed, a firm brake
- Trust your ears for any knocks, whines or rattles
