HP vs PCP: which car finance is right for you?

By the Northern Bear Automotive team · 18 June 2026 · 5 min read

Hire Purchase or Personal Contract Purchase? We break down how each works and how to choose the one that fits how you drive.

Two of the most common ways to finance a car are Hire Purchase (HP) and Personal Contract Purchase (PCP). They look similar on the surface — you pay monthly to drive the car — but they work differently, and the right one really depends on how long you want to keep the car and what you want at the end.

How Hire Purchase (HP) works

With HP, you put down a deposit and then spread the rest of the cost over fixed monthly payments. Once you've made the final payment, the car is yours — simple as that.

  • You own the car outright at the end
  • Payments are usually higher than PCP for the same car, because you're paying off the full value
  • No mileage limits to worry about

How Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) works

PCP also starts with a deposit and monthly payments, but a big chunk of the car's value is deferred to the end as a final 'balloon' payment. When the agreement finishes you choose what to do next.

  • Lower monthly payments than HP, typically
  • At the end you can pay the balloon and keep the car, hand it back, or part-exchange for a new one
  • Usually comes with an annual mileage limit

The key differences at a glance

  • Ownership: guaranteed with HP; optional with PCP
  • Monthly cost: generally higher with HP, lower with PCP
  • Flexibility at the end: HP just ends; PCP gives you choices
  • Mileage: unrestricted on HP; capped on PCP

So which should you choose?

If you like to keep a car for years and want it to be yours, HP often makes sense. If you like changing your car regularly and prefer lower monthly payments, PCP can be a better fit.
