5 things to check before you apply for car finance

By the Northern Bear Automotive team · 10 June 2026 · 4 min read

A couple of minutes of prep can make your application smoother and help you choose with confidence. Here's our quick checklist.

A little preparation goes a long way with car finance. Before you apply, run through these five quick checks — they'll help you apply with confidence and avoid surprises.

1. Know your budget — monthly and total

Decide what you can comfortably afford each month, then look at the total cost over the whole agreement, not just the monthly figure. The two can tell very different stories.

2. Check your credit file

It's worth seeing what lenders will see. You can check your credit report for free, and fixing simple errors — like an old address or a closed account still showing as open — can help.

3. Think about a deposit or part-exchange

A deposit isn't always required, but putting something down (including the value of a car you're trading in) can reduce what you need to borrow.

4. Have your details ready

Lenders typically want your address history, employment details and a rough idea of your income and outgoings. Having these to hand makes the process quicker.

5. Choose your car and dealer

You're free to choose any UK dealer. Knowing the vehicle and the dealer when you enquire means we can move faster on your behalf.

Ready when you are — start a no-obligation enquiry and we'll do the legwork across our lender panel, subject to status.
